MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
The W113 was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963 as a replacement for its predecessors, the 190SL and 300SL. The 250SL variant was introduced in December 1966 with only a year of production through to January 1968, when it was replaced with the 280SL
Recognised by its clean, straight lines and large Mercedes-Benz star in the grille, the W113 was available as a coupé, or convertible with either a hard top or soft folding roof. It had virtually nothing in common with its predecessors, with its chassis based on that of the 220SE (W111) saloon, with modifications to be tauter, offering a sportier feel. The relatively tall nature of the roof made it quite easy to get in and out of, and the inwardly facing curvature of the roofline sparked many analogies with Far Eastern Temples – coining the term ‘Pagoda’.
The bonnet was styled with a slight bulge to accommodate the straight six-cylinder engine, again developed from that in the saloon. Developing 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) and 216 nm of torque, the 2,496 cc unit with multi-port fuel injection had 7 main bearings as opposed to 4 in the outgoing 230SL. The transmission was either the standard four-speed manual or four-speed automatic
It was the first ever sports car to come with a ‘safety body’. It had a rigid passenger cell and designated crumple zones with impact-absorbing front and rear sections built into the vehicle structure. With recirculating ball steering, a dual-circuit brake system, gas-filled shock absorbers and radial ply tyres, it offered a sporty feeling with exceptional handling due to its taut chassis, but also a very compliant ride too.
The W113 proved to be a sound foundation for all subsequent SLs: An exceptional blend of good performance with the highest levels of comfort.
Currently under preparation and available for viewing at our showroom. This 250SL is unmistakeably the best on offer in the market. A very user-friendly Pagoda to enjoy and own.
Manufacture completion date of 17th August 1967 and delivered to its first owner in the USA in Dark Red paint, with a recent colour change to Blue Gray Metallic and Navy Blue interior.
History file consists of original handbook, original American Dealer Service network book, data card, extensive service invoices dating back to the 1990s from USA, extensive hand-written costing notes, and recent current works in excess of £25,000 to include colour change and mechanical work.
