MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
The W113 was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963 as a replacement for its predecessors, the 190SL and 300SL. The 280SL variant was introduced in December 1967 with production continuing until February 1971

Recognised by its clean, straight lines and large Mercedes-Benz star in the grille, the W113 was available as a coupé, or convertible with either a hard top or soft folding roof. It had virtually nothing in common with its predecessors, with its chassis based on that of the 220SE (W111) saloon, with modifications to be tauter, offering a sportier feel. The relatively tall nature of the roof made it quite easy to get in and out of, and the inwardly facing curvature of the roofline sparked many analogies with Far Eastern Temples – coining the term ‘Pagoda’.

The bonnet was styled with a slight bulge to accommodate the straight six-cylinder engine, again developed from that in the saloon. Developing 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) and 244 nm of torque, the 2.8 litre unit with multi-port fuel injection produced more than adequate power with a very smooth delivery. The transmission was either the standard four-speed manual or four-speed automatic

The W113 was the first ever sports car to come with a ‘safety body’. It had a rigid passenger cell and designated crumple zones with impact-absorbing front and rear sections built into the vehicle structure. With recirculating ball steering, a dual-circuit brake system, gas-filled shock absorbers and radial ply tyres, it offered a sporty feeling with exceptional handling due to its taut chassis, but also a very compliant ride too.

The W113 proved to be a sound foundation for all subsequent SLs: An exceptional blend of good performance with the highest levels of comfort.
