MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
The lightweight "Superleggera" (Superlight) body was designed by prestigious coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring in Milan. It came as a coupé with two small rear seats and in late 1961 as a four-seat convertible. Its superb continental looks caused a sensation on its unveiling at the 1958 London Motor Show & was the first truly modern Aston Martin capable of 140 MPH. Although the design & constriction techniques were Italian, the DB4 was the first Aston to be built at the company's Newport Pagnell works in Buckinghamshire, England. Unlike the previous model, the DB Mark III, the DB4 was an all new model. Its frame was designed in six weeks flat in 1957 and would be used at Aston through the 1960's & 1970's. The car also had a rugged 3.7 liter inline six-cylinder engine from the brilliant designer Tadek Marek. The DB4 also gave birth to two unique body styles; the lightweight DB4GT, which previewed the DB5 to come, and the stunning DB4GT Zagato. The later was the first collaboration between Aston & Coachbuilder Zagato & was designed to compete against the Ferrari.
