MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
The 230SL (W113) was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963 as a replacement for its predecessors, the 190SL and 300SL. The 230SL was updated in November 1966 to the 250SL and in November 1967 to the last production series as a 280SL.

With its inwardly facing roof curvature and many analogies with Far Eastern Temples, these models soon became better known as the ‘Pagoda’. They were however relatively easy to get in and out of due the tall nature of the roof. Also recognised by its clean, straight lines and large Mercedes-Benz star in the grille, this SL was available as a convertible with a hard top and soft folding roof. It had virtually nothing in common with its predecessors, with its chassis based on that of the 220SE (W111) saloon modified to offer a sportier feel.

The bonnet was styled with a slight bulge to accommodate the straight six cylinder engine, again developed from that in the saloon. Developing for the 230SL / 250SL 170 HP (SAE) at 5,600 rpm & 280SL 195 HP at 6,500 rpm with mechanical multi-port fuel injection produced a very smooth power delivery. Paired with the standard four-speed manual transmission, the W113 SL’s also offered an optional extra four-speed automatic transmission too & later with the ZF five-speed manual transmission.

With recirculating ball steering, a dual-circuit brake system, gas-filled shock absorbers and radial ply tyres, it offered a sporty feeling with exceptional handling due to its taut chassis, but also a very compliant ride too. The Pagoda was the first ever sports car to come with a ‘safety body’. It had a rigid passenger cell and designated crumple zones with impact-absorbing front and rear sections built into the vehicle structure.

The Pagoda proved to be a sound foundation for all subsequent SLs: An exceptional blend of good performance with the highest levels of comfort, with some 48,912 built between 1963 - 1971.

THIS VEHICLE
Presented in the original factory delivered colour of White (Code DB040) paintwork, with matching hard top and complemented by Mid-Red Leather Interior, Mid-Red carpets and Mid-Red mohair soft top. An original UK delivered Pagoda, showing only six previous owners, this 230SL comes with a history file containing old MOT certificates, period and current invoices with restoration images.

A full component-off restoration by a Mercedes-Benz marque specialist, Silchester Garages completed in June 2014. The bodyshell was stripped and any panels requiring replacement were repaired or replaced as a matter of course. A rebuild of the transmission, engine and rear axle with new brake components was undertaken. Interior retrim was done in-house at Silchester in the chosen colours of Mid-Red leather, Red carpet and new Burgundy soft top canvas from original Mercedes materials. Lots of new parts fitted to include bumpers, windscreen glass, period retro stereo, speakers and electric aerial. The period square weave carpet was changed for 250SL / 280SL two-tone loop pile carpet which sits very well, as does the later fitment of headrests.

The previous owner who commissioned the restoration and purchased the car from Silchester Garages clocked up some 4k miles, and maintained and enhanced it to its current condition. Presenting it at a number of local Concours events, we are delighted to report that it was awarded as "Winner" at the Pure Nostalgia Classic Car & Retro Show 2017, "Winner" at Battlesbridge Classic Car Show in 2015 and "Visitors Choice" in the Mersea Island Lion Club.

Factory and standard options include:
• Manual four speed transmission
• Power steering
• Rear third transverse seat

In our opinion, the best way to enjoy a Pagoda is with these early cars which are often overlooked. The five-main bearing engine makes for a free-revving balance with a manual transmission. This is a show-winning car presented in immaculate condition by its current owner.

This vehicle comes highly recommended, and has been a pleasure to own by the last owner. Solid bodywork and sound mechanics provide for a reliable classic to UK specification. It will come tried and tested, with a full service and warranty.
