MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
With its design and development beginning in the 1960s, the Jaguar XJS with its trademark rear window buttresses was launched in 1975. It was the intended replacement for the iconic E-Type, and with the proven Jaguar 5.3 litre V!2, initially paired with a manual or automatic transmission, the XJS provided equally compelling performance.
Various model incarnations followed in the subsequent years, including a 3.6 litre straight six, but more notably in 1983, a 'T'-top cabriolet version debuted – the XJ-SC, with a fixed targa style centre section and fixed cant rails above the doors.
Around the same time, in response to Jaguar’s motorsport success in collaboration with Tom Walkinshaw Racing, the ‘TWR’ limited edition XJS was introduced. Completed vehicles were taken from the Jaguar manufacturing plant in Coventry to the TWR facility in Kidlington, Oxfordshire where customers could choose from a comprehensive list of upgrade options. These included a 6.0 litre V12 (converted from the original 5.3 with an increase in power from 291 to 318 bhp) and TWR’s own 5-speed manual gearbox – only the XJ-SC was available with both.
The targa-type model was replaced in 1988 with a full convertible. Production of the XJS came to an end in 1996, after 115,000 units had been manufactured – it was replaced by the Jaguar XK8 in the same year.
THIS ACTUAL CAR
This Jaguar XJ-SC was purchased new from Hatfields Jaguar, Sheffield in January 1986 as a company car by Mr Turner of well-established newsagents and stationers H Turner & Son. After a full restoration around 1996 including a full bare metal respray, we believe in 2004 ownership transferred to Mr Turner personally to form part of his own private collection. In 2018, Jaguar enthusiast Chris Hanlon became the third registered keeper.
The TWR options fitted to this example include the 318 bhp 6.0 litre V12 engine, TWR’s own 5-speed manual gearbox, lowered suspension, larger ventilated discs, upgraded steering and 16-inch Speedline alloy wheels. We understand this is now the only Jaguar TWR XJ-SC 6.0 manual in existence.
Presenting in fine order with a distinctive road presence, it comes with an extensive history file including original first registration documents, Jaguar invoices for the vehicle (Jaguar New Vehicle Order Form) and TWR enhancements, Jaguar and TWR original sales brochures from 1986, TWR Jaguar Racing brochures, car stickers and other information, original V5C, full service history and MOTs.
This vehicle was sourced for a private collection from Silverstone Auctions but other vehicles avialable for viewing in our showroom in Great Leighs UK, near Stansted Airport on an appointment basis. It would complement any car collection, and represents a good acquisition opportunity.
